Spam - Setting Up Filters

Your A1 Web Server Control Panel allows you to set up email filters.

In all honesty, filters will probably not be the ultimate solution to your spam problem, but they may prove to be one of the tools you use to build a complete solution.

In this tutorial, we will demonstrate how to set up a simple filter to delete any email with the word DIET in the subject line.

The first step is to log into your cPanel and click on the MAIL icon.

You should now be looking at the Mail sub-menu. Click on the link which say's "Email Filtering"

This will bring you into the filters area.

To add a new filter, click on the Add Filter link:

On this screen, you will actually configure your filter using the two pulldown boxes and the two text boxes you see below.

First, pull down the first option box, as shown below, and select "Subject".

Next, pull down the second option box, and select "contains".

In the subsequent textbox, type the word "DIET". In the lower textbox, type the word "Discard".

You have now specified a filter which will instruct the mail server to discard any email which contains the word "DIET".

As you've probably surmised, you can set up many various filters by selecting various options and words.

To save this filter to your settings profile, simply click the "Activate" button as shown below.

As we mentioned, filtering will probably not stop the bulk of your spam. Spammers have simply become way too sophisticated for filters to be very effective.

Our next lesson will show you a much more powerful tool to use.
