In 1919, a young man named Joseph Johnson was employed by a tool making firm in Wisconsin. At that time, the socket and the handle were in one piece, and mechanics had to carry around a large number of heavy, expensive tools.

Joe Johnson toyed with the idea of developing say 5 different handles and perhaps 10 wrench heads that could “snap-on” together, to give 50 possible combinations.

Joe presented the idea to his boss, who didn’t think much of
it, but one of Joe’s colleagues did. His name was William
Seidemann, and together,they formed a company which they named Snap-On Tools.
